COMPOSITION COMPETITION

(November 28 - 30, 2008)

The Viotti Composition Competition 2008 is devoted to a work for solo instrument or a group of instruments in a chamber music ensemble from duo to quintet. Candidates must present a work lasting between 7 and 12 minutes. Works submitted must be from the following instrumentation in any combination: piano, string quartet (violin, violin, viola, cello).

GENERAL CONDITIONS
1) The 59th Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition 2008 is open to COMPOSERS of all nationality born after 30 November, 1968.

RULES
2) Only works by living composers not published will be accepted.
3) The compositions participating to the competition won’t be returned to their owner.
4) The decisions of the Jury are final; in case of differences of interpretation of the Competition Regulations, the Italian text will be held as definitive.
5) The Organising Committee may eliminate from the Competition one or more sections in case of a deficiency in the number of participants, in such a case, those concerned will be promptly informed and the entrance fee will be refunded.
6) The first prize is indivisible. The Jury can decide not to award any prize.
7) First prize winners in former Vercelli International Competitions are not allowed to compete in the section for which they were awarded for the prize.

APPLICATION FORM
The application shall be submitted anonymously. Candidates must send their application to the Segreteria del Concorso Gian Battista Viotti, Via Monte di Pietà 39 -13100 Vercelli (Italy), no later than 14 November 2008 together with:
a) The musical score (7 copies). Candidates must ensure that nothing that could make it possible to identify them appears anywhere on the scores. Otherwise, the work will be excluded from the competition;
b) a sealed envelope marked by a CODE NAME* containing:
b-1) the composer's surname, first name, address, e-mail address, telephone number;
b-2) copy of a birth certificate or equivalent document (passport, identity card etc.);
b-3) curriculum vitae and typewritten details of musical and artistic education;
b-4) a declaration signed and dated by the candidate, stating that the work it has not been published and that it has never been performed, even in part.

* The code name must be clearly visible on each document. The code name is indispensable and replaces the name of the composer.

ENTRY FEE
The entrance fee of the Composition Competition amounting to 50 (fifty) Euro, must be sent only by bank draft payable to the:
SOCIETÀ DEL QUARTETTO DI VERCELLI, via Monte di Pietà n.39 - 13100 VERCELLI (Italy)

Those candidates whose application form is incomplete and whose entrance fee is unpaid within the set time limit should not be allowed to compete. In no circumstances can the entrance fee be refunded (see paragraph 5).

The Composition Competition takes places in three stages from 28 to 30 November, 2008:

1) First round in which the Jury will select those scores that comply with the rules of the competition. A maximum of 15 works will be admitted to the second round.

2) Second round in which a maximum of three works will be selected for the Final Round.

3) Final Round in which the Jury will select the winner composition.
